Ashley Judd on women in the media:

“That women are joining in the ongoing disassembling of my appearance is salient. Patriarchy is not men. Patriarchy is a system in which both women and men participate. It privileges, inter alia, the interests of boys and men over the bodily integrity, autonomy, and dignity of girls and women. It is subtle, insidious, and never more dangerous than when women passionately deny that they themselves are engaging in it. This abnormal obsession with women’s faces and bodies has become so normal that we (I include myself at times—I absolutely fall for it still) have internalized patriarchy almost seamlessly. We are unable at times to identify ourselves as our own denigrating abusers, or as abusing other girls and women.

A case in point is that this conversation was initially promulgated largely by women; a sad and disturbing fact.

. . .I ask especially how we can leverage strong female-to-female alliances to confront and change that there is no winning here as women. It doesn’t actually matter if we are aging naturally, or resorting to surgical assistance. We experience brutal criticism. The dialogue is constructed so that our bodies are a source of speculation, ridicule, and invalidation, as if they belong to others—and in my case, to the actual public.

. . .The insanity has to stop, because as focused on me as it appears to have been, it is about all girls and women. In fact, it’s about boys and men, too, who are equally objectified and ridiculed, according to heteronormative definitions of masculinity that deny the full and dynamic range of their personhood. It affects each and every one of us, in multiple and nefarious ways: our self-image, how we show up in our relationships and at work, our sense of our worth, value, and potential as human beings. Join in—and help change—the Conversation.”

Face-Off with a Lion

One of my absolute favorite magazines of all time is National Geographic. Fuck Vogue, W, Cosmo, etc. – you got nothing on nature and science.

Are You As Busy As You Think?

Interesting article about how we really use our time, and the quote is food for thought:

“Change your language. Instead of saying “I don’t have time” try saying “it’s not a priority,” and see how that feels. Often, that’s a perfectly adequate explanation. I have time to iron my sheets, I just don’t want to. But other things are harder. Try it: “I’m not going to edit your résumé, sweetie, because it’s not a priority.” “I don’t go to the doctor because my health is not a priority.” If these phrases don’t sit well, that’s the point. Changing our language reminds us that time is a choice. If we don’t like how we’re spending an hour, we can choose differently.”

Advanced Style

“I am dressed up for the theater, of my life, everyday.”

I cannot express through this post how inspiring and fantastic these women are. They are so confident and wise and within this 4 minute video I wanted to list at least a dozen quotes from the various women! And the greatest compliment that I’ve received in awhile was from a friend who said that I (and she) would be like this in 40-50 years!

Who’s seeing this with me this summer?!

Ira Glass on the Secret to Success in Creative Work

So, I’ve posted this quote before here, but it was sent to me again in video form so I thought it was worth posting again!

Lilac

I’m obsessed with this picture and I can’t stop looking at it. I don’t know how to describe it, but I live for the mood/tone/spirit/aesthetics – whatever you want to call it captured in this picture. It’s probably her hair.

Success

I need to tattoo this on my arm!

“It may very well be true that another person is succeeding and you are not experiencing success, but one has nothing to do with the other. There’s not a limited amount of success going around. In what world does it make sense that if I am funny, you are not funny? NO WORLD. We need to believe in, encourage, support, and massage each other’s egos. I believe in you. I believe in what you’re doing. Please keep doing it, and maybe do a little of it near me.”

2012 New Years Resolutions

Happy New Year! Unoriginally, I spent part of my day yesterday putting together a New Year’s Resolution list based on my thoughts from the past year and my hopes and dreams for the year to come.

When I reflect on 2011 and my life in general, I can’t help but feel both amazed and humbled. I have a tendency to be incredibly harsh towards myself (and probably a bit to others – sorry, working on it), and my immediate reflection of the year was “well you didn’t make a ton of progress with your business, did you?!” With that crappy analysis out of the way, I was able to notice that, sure, monetarily, maybe it wasn’t fantastic. But almost everything else was amazing, and I’m so proud of everything I did, so happy and grateful to all the people that helped and believed in me, and amazed by the knowledge I absorbed this year – I really think it was a year of exponential learning and progress.

To preface my list I want to share two thoughts that I’ve learned recently (one as recently as today) that have formed my plan to carry out these resolutions in the New Year. One is from Jane Hamill of Fashion Brain Academy – originally in regards to what makes a successful fashion designer, but I think can be applied in a variety of situations: “Take ACTION every single day in some way.” I stumbled a bit in 2011 beating myself up that my action over the course of the day or days was not enough. I’ve realized that taking constant action every day – some days small, some much larger – is so much more productive and positive than one great day followed by a few off days. I plan on using this space to record my daily action and watch watch happens.

The second (and part of my daily action of the day!) comes from Gabby Bernstein the Spirit Junkie. The video from which this quote was taken is below but this is what hit me the most from her talk: “Those who are certain of the outcome can afford to wait; and wait without anxiety. Let it go, expect miracles.” Patience is not my virtue. At all. And this resonated a lot after a year in which both so much happened, but nothing seemed to have happened. Growing a business takes a lot of time, patience, and money. I could have enjoyed the ride a little more in 2011 and plan to do so this year.

And now finally, onto the resolutions!

Healthy Mind, Body, and Home

  • Get back more into spirituality and meditation; journal more
  • Give eating Paleo a serious try and see how I feel
  • Work out consistently
  • Live a little more Zen; less stuff, more organization

Business

  • Grow this blog, the blog of Mission Fashion, and start one for Silk and Cyanide
  • Take serious steps in establishing all businesses –> including a Fall 2012 launch of Silk and Cyanide
  • Make working full time for my businesses more a reality for both Jessie and myself

Define My Style, Be Inspired and Live the Life I Desire

  • More consistently create inspired projects –> at least 1 every 2 weeks
  • Set up an inspiration board –> organize all my clippings and saved images into one accessible place
  • Define my personal style and that of Silk and Cyanide
  • Take my inspiration into reality in the form of new outfits, makeup, styles, costumes, or designs

Travel

  • I’d like to visit a new country (or even better, a new continent!) this year

And to close, my action from yesterday (in addition to making this list) was to create a design plan with Tim for our closet space. As with many apartments in NYC, there is always a sad tradeoff. We have a decent sized space but the worst closets designed by man. They stress me out because not everything fits and nothing is easily accessible. Our plan is inspired by Apartment Therapy and I’m hoping will be rolled out within the month. Pictures to come!

I’m a few days late here after Black Friday, but I love this ad by Patagonia. Buy better, not more!
